A dimmer switch is the single most effective lighting upgrade available without changing a fitting. Dulora's dimmer range covers trailing edge LED dimmers for in-wall installation, smart dimmer switches for app and voice control, plug-in dimmers for lamp and table light applications, and dial and knob dimmer options across the range. Every dimmer in the range is selected for LED compatibility and tested for smooth, flicker-free performance with Dulora dimmable globes across the full 1 to 100 per cent range. Compatible with DimEzy switch plate formats for standard Australian wall installations. For guidance on choosing the right dimmer for your home or project, see How to Choose the Right Dimmer Switch for a High-End Home. For installation guidance, see How to Install a Dimmer Switch for LED Lighting: A Sparky's Guide. Browse all Dimmable GLS LED Bulbs and LED Spotlights for compatible globe options.

How to Choose the Right Dimmer Switch for LED Lighting

A dimmer switch is not a universal product. The type of dimmer, the load it controls, and the LED globes it is paired with all determine whether the result is smooth, flicker-free atmospheric control or a frustrating combination of buzz, flicker, and a restricted dimming range. Getting it right becomes clear once you understand what to look for.

Leading edge versus trailing edge: why it matters for LED

Older dimmer switches designed for incandescent and halogen globes use leading edge technology, which cuts the front of each alternating current cycle to reduce power. This technology works well with resistive loads like incandescent globes but is poorly suited to the capacitive loads of LED drivers, often causing flicker, buzz, and a minimum dimming level well above 1 per cent.

Trailing edge dimmers cut the back of each AC cycle instead, which is the correct technology for LED loads. A quality trailing edge LED dimmer paired with a dimmable LED globe produces smooth, quiet, flicker-free dimming from 1 to 100 per cent with no audible buzz from the dimmer or the globe. For all new LED dimmer installations in Australian homes, trailing edge is the correct choice. For guidance on selecting the right dimmer for specific applications including high-end homes and commercial projects, see How to Choose the Right Dimmer Switch for a High-End Home.

Minimum load requirements

LED dimmers have both a minimum and a maximum load rating. The maximum load is the total wattage of all globes on the circuit; the minimum load is the total wattage below which the dimmer will not operate correctly. For LED circuits, minimum load requirements are often a practical constraint: a circuit of six 7W GU10 downlights (42W total) is well within a standard LED dimmer's maximum rating, but a single 5W bedside lamp globe may fall below some dimmers' minimum load. Check the dimmer's minimum load specification before installing on low-wattage circuits.

Multi-globe circuits

For circuits controlling multiple globes, the combined LED load of all globes must sit within the dimmer's rated range. Count the total wattage of all globes on the circuit and choose a dimmer rated comfortably above that figure. A 150W-rated trailing edge dimmer controlling a circuit of ten 7W GU10 globes (70W total) has an appropriate safety margin. Never run a dimmer at its maximum rated load continuously.

Smart dimmer switches

Smart dimmer switches add app control, voice assistant integration, and scheduling capability to any dimmable LED circuit. They replace standard wall dimmer switches and require the same trailing edge technology and LED load compatibility as manual dimmers. For homes with multiple dimmer circuits, smart dimmers allow scene control across rooms from a single app. For installation guidance on any dimmer type, see How to Install a Dimmer Switch for LED Lighting: A Sparky's Guide.

Plug-in dimmers

Plug-in dimmers are the simplest option for table lamps, floor lamps, and any fitting that connects via a standard power point. They require no electrical installation and work with any dimmable globe in a lamp with an E27, E14, B22, or B15 base. For renters or spaces where an in-wall dimmer is not practical, a plug-in dimmer is an immediate atmospheric upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions: Dimmer Switches

  • What is the difference between a leading edge and a trailing edge dimmer?
  • Leading edge dimmers were designed for incandescent and halogen globes and often cause flicker, buzz, and poor dimming range with LED globes. Trailing edge dimmers are designed for LED loads and produce smooth, quiet, flicker-free dimming from 1 to 100 per cent. For all new LED dimmer installations, trailing edge is the correct choice.
  • Will my existing dimmer work with Dulora LED globes?
  • If your existing dimmer is a leading edge model installed for halogen or incandescent globes, you may experience flicker, buzzing, or a restricted dimming range with LED globes. Replacing it with a quality trailing edge LED-compatible dimmer will resolve these issues in most cases.
  • How do I know if a dimmer is compatible with my LED globes?
  • Check the dimmer's stated LED compatibility and minimum load rating. The combined wattage of all globes on the circuit must sit within the dimmer's rated range above its minimum load threshold. All dimmers in the Dulora range are selected for compatibility with Dulora dimmable globes and tested for smooth performance across the full 1 to 100 per cent range.
  • Can I install a dimmer switch myself?
  • In-wall dimmer switch replacement is classified as electrical work in Australia and must be performed by a licensed electrician. Plug-in dimmers do not require electrical installation and can be used immediately with any compatible lamp and globe.
  • Do smart dimmer switches work with all LED globes?
  • Smart dimmer switches require the same trailing edge LED compatibility as manual dimmers. They work with any dimmable LED globe that is compatible with standard trailing edge dimmers. Check the smart dimmer's compatibility specifications and load rating before installation.
